Bicinium is a Renaissance and early Baroque eras’ musical style, a bicinium¬† was a composition for only two parts, especially for the purpose of teaching counterpoint or singing.

The term has had two usages

Nowadays, the term has come to mean any composition at all from the Renaissance or early Baroque period of two parts.
Originally, a bicinium was to a two-part composition used for teaching, most commonly, in German-speaking areas.

The term was first used in Poland in 1540. Volumes of bicinia were published soon in Germany, Netherlands and even in Italy, as its usefulness in teaching  became apparent.

Students were expected to master singing a single part in a duet. Usually a bicinium was designed to be performed by students about same age and skill, rather than for a student and their teacher.
