notes

In all likelihood, this was the duo with the most widespread circulation both in printed and in manuscript sources.

Zarlino (1558), p. 259, included the duo in Chap. 64 of the third part of his Istitutioni harmoniche: «Quel che si de' osservare quando si volesse fare una terza parte alla sproveduta sopra due altre proposte». He added at the duo two different third lines – both textless – with respectively the following rubrics: «Terza parte aggiunta» and «Overamente a quest'altro modo».
