Adriano Banchieri, La Banchierina overo cartella picciola del canto figurato. Opera utilissima alli figlioli, per acquistarne il nome di sicuro cantore (Alessandro Vincenti, Venice 1623) RISM: B846
Four duos on the hexachord.
The duos are found on p. 36-39 of this treatise. Their composer – some Giacinto da Brescia – was a pupil of Banchieri and – as it is stated at the beginning of the first duo – these were Giacinto's exercises in composition revised by his teacher. Every duo has the same structure: the upper line is constructed from the eleven notes of the ascending and descending hexachords followed by an ascending and descending nine- or ten-note scale (hence including one mutation) of 17 or 19 notes; the lower line is a free counterpoint. Only the upper line bears both the solmization syllables and the lyrics, which – as the rubric printed above the first exercise explains – is useful to accustom the pupil to sing a text in tune after having learnt the melody.
